Cable Management for Sit-Stand Desks: Plan for Movement

Prepare a sit-stand desk cable-management brief covering desk travel, connected equipment, containment and future changes.

Clearer desks. Better working days.

A sit-stand desk should be planned as a moving workstation. An arrangement that looks tidy in one position may be unsuitable when the desk changes height or equipment is added. Before requesting cable-management work, bring together the furniture information, connected devices and operational requirements. The aim is an organised workspace that can still be used and maintained as intended.

Record the desk model and how it is used

Send the desk manufacturer and model, any available assembly information and photographs of the current setup. Explain whether the workstation is personal, shared or regularly rearranged. Include the intended range of movement and the location of nearby storage, walls and fixed equipment. Existing monitor arms, control boxes and accessories may occupy the same space as proposed cable containment. Photograph these details from normal accessible positions. Accurate furniture information helps the installer review compatible options; it is more useful than asking for a generic tidy-up that overlooks how the desk actually operates.

Identify fixed and moving equipment

Describe which devices move with the desktop and which remain on the floor, wall or another piece of furniture. List the screens, computer, docking equipment and charging accessories that are expected to remain connected. Tell the office if the setup is likely to change, such as moving from a desktop computer to a laptop dock. The route between moving furniture and a fixed connection deserves particular attention in the brief. Do not improvise a change by pulling equipment or tightening leads: ask the people responsible for the installation to assess the arrangement.

Consider access as well as appearance

Concealing every connection can create a difficult workstation to maintain. Explain which controls, sockets or accessories your team needs to reach and how often equipment is changed. Ask for the proposed arrangement to be considered against both the desk guidance and the needs of the users. Where there are existing trays or accessories, establish whether they can be retained rather than assuming they will all be replaced. A consistent finish across a desk bank is useful, but individual equipment needs should remain visible in the specification rather than being lost in a uniform visual treatment.

Agree responsibilities before equipment is moved

Nominate a workplace contact and identify any IT provider who controls disconnection, reconnection or configuration. Explain whether desks can be released during business hours and who can authorise changes. Report known damage or electrical concerns separately from the appearance of the cables; HSE guidance identifies damaged equipment and trailing leads as issues requiring attention. A cable-management visit should not be treated as automatic approval of the underlying installation. Any electrical work, product repair or specialist testing needs to be identified and agreed with the appropriate people.

Plan the handover and future equipment changes

Discuss what will be checked at handover and who will confirm that the workstation can be returned to use. Keep relevant product information and a record of any items that remain outside the agreed scope. Explain the arrangement to the users so later changes do not undo the intended routes. If more desks are planned, keep the model and equipment information together for the next phase. CODEEX can review sit-stand cable-management enquiries alongside monitor-arm fitting and office furniture assembly, helping the office assess the related tasks from one clear brief.
